For years, Gypsophila, otherwise known as baby’s breath, has been top of the list when it comes to weddings. Gypsophila, gyp, as in those tiny delicate white flowers that seem to last an age and never fail to make an impact, whether it is used in small doses or frothy bundles have always been a popular choice. From bouquets, flower crowns, dainty decor to bustling bundles of gypsophila, our DIY brides are always coming up with new and inspiring ideas to incorporate this uber cost effective, pretty flower into their dream day.
Being in the wholesale trade for umpteen years, I have been asked numerous times the difference between variety, quality and quantity of gypsophila. So here it is ladies, to save your confusion. There are many varieties of Gypsophila available with the main difference being the flower head size and the grade !! On one end of the spectrum, the smaller headed varieties, we have Million Star / Starburst (a favourite of our Triangle florists – because it is EXTRA grade)…. following on to the other end, the larger headed varieties, we have the wonderful Xlence / Mirabella / Overtime and even, Double Time… & slotted slap bang in the middle are hundreds of other varieties that may tickle your fancy including Beauty Bride, cassiopeia and victoria. The weight of Gypsophila usually depends solely on the stem length, for instance, 60cm would be a smaller bunch than say 80cm which would be a larger bunch (heavier weight) and ultimately, it is more cost effective, even though it’s the same stem count!! In wholesale, Gypsophila is typically sold in wraps of 25 stems at stem lengths of 60cm to 80cm, however on Triangle Nursery Ltd website, bulk packs have JUST become available (sadly, quite exciting news for us !!).
Does that make sense?
Bouquets, whether it be your bridal bouquet or bridesmaids bouquets, it is a big part of your big day! When it comes down to it, there are two obvious choices – 100% Gypsophila – a floral ‘cloud’ or a combination of flower varieties, like roses, peonies, ranunculus, hydrangeas (& the list goes on…) and gyp to create that elegant twist.
Or maybe you fancy a little more sumptuous for yourself?
Or are you in love with the idea of gyp but are startled by the bright white? Have you ever considered dyed gyp to incorporate into your colour scheme and add a quirky twist. (Photograph below: Gypsophila Gold)
Or even a flower crown?
Moving on… it is important to make sure that our handsome fellows, the groom and his best man are looking tip top for the big day – including their buttonholes !!
For the ceremony pew ends or reception table centres, it’s your time to get creative – whether your looking to create that dainty decor feel or create a damn right, WOW factor – gypsophila is the perfect flower for its versatility, ease of use and of course, it is cost effective !! If you are considering a jam jar theme for your big day, Gypsophila, small or large headed varieties are a perfect filler on its own or accompanied by other varieties >>>
