Calla

The Calla Lily, which also is known as Zantedeschia, is a popular guest at special occasions. A truly unique and elegant flower, it works well in buttonholes, corsages and decorations, luxury bouquets, as well as a simple vase in your home.

Origin

This flower used to go by the impressive name of the Ethiopian arum lily. It originates from an area extending from South Africa to Malawi, where it grows in swamps. The areas where it grows are alternately marshy and dry. This means that the Calla is not only beautiful, but also strong.

Colour and Shapes

The flower comes in a range of colours, from white, red, orange, pink, purple and bi-coloured. The most noticeable element of the Calla is its shape, the spathe. The spathe is actually a ‘petal’ and emerges serenely from the stem.

Symbolism

The Calla has numerous symbolic meanings, from purity, sympathy and beauty. The Calla is also considered a lucky flower. This dates from the Greek and Roman period. They associated the flower with festivities and enjoyment, because the shape of the bloom resembles a goblet used for drinking. Although many centuries have passed since then, the Calla has always retained this meaning.

Care for your Calla

To get the best from your wholesale cut calla lilies please read the care instructions below carefully:

  • On receipt, cut the stems with a sharp knife at 45 degrees.
  • Avoid touching the flower heads with your hands.
  • Sterilise a flower bucket and fill with clean water & add flower food.
  • Place the flowers in the bucket and leave to re-hydrate for 4/5 hours, (or over night), in a cool room. (Do not cram the flowers in – use more than one bucket if necessary).
  • Try to keep the temperature around 8 degrees.

Never leave cut flowers in direct sunlight, near a radiator, in a draft or near fruit. (The gas used to ripen fruit will harm most flowers). Keep the calla lilies in a cool place and always keep out of the way of children.
