Origin

The Peony, (or Paeony), is the name of the flower in the genus ‘Paeonia’. Peonies are native to Asia, North America and Southern Europe. The peony is named after Paeon, the Greek god of medicine and healing.

Availability

Peonies are extremely popular wedding flowers, they are loved by brides from all over the world,  thanks to their gorgeous ruffles and large, full heads that make stunning additions to any bouquet or table decoration – but many brides can be disappointed because the peony is only available on the wholesale flower dutch markets from the start of April until July. They are now being sourced by Israel from as early as January – so watch the space!

Wholesale peony flowers are mainly grown in Holland under glass and are sent to the flower auctions for sale. Some import peonies are available after the end of July, but they are very few & far between and cannot be relied on.

Symbolism

The peony represents love, happiness and health, amongst other things. It’s no surprise that the peony is a popular guest at spring weddings. But it’s not just lovebirds that are attracted to this flower. Surely we all enjoy bringing a big bunch of positivity and love into our home?

A tip to remember, is that as peonies have a large head, you don’t need as many to fill your bouquet. Instead to reduce costs, go for the natural and wild look by adding a little extra foliage in to the mix. Or consider the minimalist look, with just one or two peonies for your bouquet.

Care for your Peonies

To get the best from your wholesale cut peonies please read the care instructions below carefully:

  • Cut the stems at a 45 degree angle with a sharp knife.
  • Fill sterilised buckets with luke warm water and add flower food.
  • Place the peonies in the buckets.
  • Leave over night to condition before using.

Peonies are notorious for being hard to predict. Normally, I would to receive delivery of the flowers at least 4 to 5 days prior to your event to ensure you have time to condition and prepare the flowers. However, recently this has been subject to change as the peonies have been coming into us much more open than expected, so please seek help from our sales and advice team to when and how long the conditioning process will take.  Just call us on 01394 385 832.

Top Tip: To prevent peonies from opening too quickly, leave the paper wrappers on whilst conditioning over night.

Never leave cut flowers in direct sunlight, near a radiator, in a draft or near fruit. (The gas used to ripen fruit will harm most flowers). Keep the peonies in a cool place and always keep out of the way of children.
