Chrysanthemums are known for their colour, charm and long vase life. This ‘golden flower’ has been favourited by China and Japan for centuries.
And why not? It brings warmth and colour, the ability to shine in every bouquet and for being dependable and hardy flowers that are as tough as old boots.
The Chrysanthemum is available year round, in a huge range of shapes, sizes and colour. Considered as a staple diet in the floristry industry, Chrysanthemums are one of the cheaper flowers available at the flower market. They are the number one flower used for funerals around the world, so you can see why they might be a hard sell when suggesting them for most circumstances.
Chrysanthemums fall into three categories. Spray chrysanthemums are the most well-known, but unfortunately, least loved. Santini chrysanthemum are shorter spray varieties, and are much more interesting; some have tiny daisy-like heads, and others have spray flowers like miniature buttons. Single-headed varieties make up the third type of chrysanthemum and these are often simply called blooms. These are becoming increasingly popular as they are the perfect flower at this time of year – they would look completely at home in a Dutch masterpiece from the 1700’s.
