To display the Fair Flowers Fair Plants (FFP) logo on their products growers must fulfil the high requirements concerning the environment and social responsibilities.

The FFP environmental certification is based on the production methods. The qualification is based on the quantity and quality of crop protection agents, fertilisers, energy and water used throughout the entire company and the seperation of water waste.

There are also 10 basic rules that have been drawn up into an ICC, (International Code of Conduct), by by the IFC, (The International Flower Coordination):

  1. Freedom of association & the right of collective bargaining.
  2. No discrimination (equality of treatment).
  3. The right to minimum wages.
  4. Respect for working hours.
  5. A healthy and safe workplace.
  6. Responsible & minimal use of pesticides.
  7. Work guarantee.
  8. Protection of the environment.
  9. No child labour.
  10. No forced labour.

A number of trade unions and human rights organisations are represented in The International Flower Coordination, (IFC), and are always present at certification audits to guarantee the legitimacy of the social quality mark to which their names are linked. If companies fail the strict certification requirements of the FFP they can be temporarily or permanently suspened from FFP membership.

The FloraHolland awards take place every year and the votes are taken in October when the nominated varieties are announced. In January 2012 the 'Glazen Tulp' award will be given to the best overall novelty.

Problems fighting pests and disease has increased because the permitted use of pesticides has been reduced by law. The introduction of biological alternatives has not been quick enough to fill the void and as a result there are not enough pesticides to control pests and disease.

A number of Dutch organisations are participating in Action Plan Rose. The objective is to bring profitability back to rose production by 2020. This plan is based on three main points: (1) Developing cultivation systems that are less dependant on pesticides, (2) Creating certified marketing chains, (3) Accomplishing an effective remedy package.

Dutch Flower Auctions are unique in so far as they use an 'Auction Clock'. The price starts at the highest point and is lowered until a buyer is willing to accept the price.

This type of auction is an alternative to conventional auctions and the descending price structure vastly increases competition between the bidders. The auction clock system is also a very fast way to auction flowers because a sale never requires more than one bid - the first bidder to accept the price buys the goods.

The original mechanical auction clocks, (first introduced in the Dutch Tulip craze), bear little resemblance to today's digital clocks, yet the concept and operation remain the same - bringing supply and demad together in a transparent way. The best possible market price is reached the moment that the downwards price is stopped by a buyer.

Over the years the technology of Dutch auction clocks has changed dramatically. Today the clock is projected overhead in the auction itself and can also be accessed remotely by computers.

The Dutch Auction Clock is a vital sales tool and will remain so for the forseeable future.
