Easter Flowers - Arum Lilies, (Calla lily), and Longiflorum Lilies

With Mothers Day over for another year, Easter is now fast approaching and our attention at Triangle Nursery is turning to Easter flowers such as Arum lilies, Longiflorum Lilies and Kentia Palms.

The Arum lily is known under a variety of names such as Calla lilies, Pig Lilies, Trumpet Lilies and Zantedeschia - all of which are the same thing! White calla lilies are the most popular colour at Easter time, closely followed by the yellow varieties. Although grown form bulb, calla lilies are not really lilies. The demand on the wholesale flower markets for Arum lilies is at it's largest at Easter time and in August for wedding flowers. Unfortunately, in these two peak periods, calla lilies are at their lowest supply levels and as a result prices can be very high. Commercially grown Arum liles come into season in late March and end in August.

Longiflorum lilies, (commonly known as 'Longi's'), are available all year round. Most varieties are white in colour but there are a few new pink varieties on the market these days. White Longis are the colour of choice at Easter time. They are available in different stem lengths and vary from one flower bud per stem up to four.

In the next few days we will be publishing guaranteed prices for both longiflorum lilies and calla lilies. Please call the Triangle Nursery sales office for more details on 01255 861263. We look for to hearing from you.

Kind Regards

Mark Kenny

The Origins of Mothers Day Flowers / Mothering Sunday Flowers

There are quite few theories regarding the origin of Mothers Day and here a just a few of them:

In the 16th century people travelled back to their mother church on Laetare Sunday. This practice was called "gone a-mothering". Whether it was the origin of the terms 'Mothering Sunday' or 'Mothers Day' is unknown.

Since neolithic times, there has been a religious festival celebrating motherhood throughout Europe. The Romans celebrated the mother Goddess Cybele during March. Mothering Sunday became part of the liturgical calendar on Laetare Sunday when most of Europe converted to Christianity. Laetare Sunday is on fourth Sunday of lent in honour of the Virgin Mary.

Other names connected with Mothers Day are Refreshment Sunday, Rose Sunday and Simnel Sunday. Rose Sunday is probably where the tradition of giving flowers to Mums has come from. Bouquets of flowers were given to all mothers in the church congregation.

Today Mothers Day is very much a commercial ocassion, and for a wholesale florist, is the biggest flower festival of the year by far. Unlike other ocassions, (like Valentines Day & red roses), there is no specific variety of flower associated with Mothers Day. The most popular flower colours are pink, white, yellow, peach and creams. This year Mothers Day in the UK is March 14th. Other countries in the world have their own Mothering Sunday on various other dates throughout the year.

Customer of Triangle Nursery featured on National TV!!

Long standing customer of Triangle Nursery, Flowers Delivered UK, were featured on ITV's This Morning show with Eamonn Holmes on Wednesday 10th February. The show compared three companies offering dozen red rose bouquets, (including Marks & Spencer & Interflora), plus three other companies offering innovative & alternative Valentines Gifts. Flowers Delivered UK's Whispering roses created a great feature with presenter Ruth Langsford describing the printed roses as "a kitch gift".

Triangle Nursery has supplied Flowers Delivered UK since their web site was launched five years ago & have seen the company grow from strength to strength ever since. After the screening on ITV's This Morning show, their order for roses was quickly increased!! A couple of quick phone calls to the Dutch Flower Auction by the Triangle sales team solved the problem immediately and staff at Flowers Delivered UK worked through the night to forfill the orders!!

Flowers Delivered UK are well known innovators in the flower trade. Their new web site offers customers the facility to upload their own photographs which are printed onto personal gift cards together with their message and delivered with the flowers. Another new product is the 'Candy Explosion Bouquet' - a great alternative to sending flowers!
