Kenyan Flower Exports fall by 6.5% in 2009

According to the Kenyan Flower Council, flower exports fell by 6.5% in 2009. Farmers have cut back production due to low prices and weak demand.

Exports fell from 40 billion Kenyan shillings to 32 billion and shipments declined from 93,000 metric tons to 87,000.

Europe accounts for approx. 30% of Kenya's flower sales, the main markets being Holland, Germany, the UK, France and Switzerland.

As a result, farmers have put their expansion plans on hold until demand increases.
